Response options ranged from 1-5 where 5 is the most favorable. The functional range of responses for the 103 schools in the cohort was approximately 3.6-4.25. DU scored 3.79/5 on department collegiality and 3.45 on department engagement. For the full faculty, both of these ratings were in the bottom third of the cohort, while pre-tenure faculty and faculty who identify as women endorsed collegiality commensurate with the top and middle groups, respectively.

What is currently happening

In the summer of 2019 the Faculty Senate and the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs hosted a summer symposium on creating collaborative department cultures and chair development. The symposium brought together thirty four faculty members from across campus to think deeply about the conditions that engender robust and fair departmental deliberation on critical issues, including a focus on conflict management and identifying means to preserve and promote collegiality. Over the next year six teams of faculty will lead initiatives to improve collaborative department cultures and chairs. One of these faculty lead working groups will focus on deliberative decision-making, with the specific charge to develop strategies for improving the quality of departmental discussion and deliberation on key issues facing faculty.

 

 

What Is Next

 

To discover the meaning and significance of the results concerning collegiality the COACHE committees will be conducting a deeper analysis of the data and will formulate action plans based on the findings.
